What is biblical counselling?
What makes biblical counselling distinctive from other talking therapies is that in biblical counselling we look beyond ourselves for help, turning to God for hope in life’s sorrows or struggles; and seeking his light in our circumstances and choices when they feel dark and we can’t see the way ahead.
Biblical counselling has proven helpful to many people because it provides the opportunity to discover from the Bible how God speaks into our situations. This is because of a belief that Jesus Christ is able to meet us in our difficulties, even difficulties of our own making, with his grace and his truth. Whether you’re new to Christianity or have been a Christian for a long time, we find that as we come to Jesus, he doesn’t leave us as we are. Rather, he changes us.
What to expect
Biblical counselling offers a place to talk where you will be listened to without being judged. Together we will try to understand what is contributing to life’s difficulties, both the external factors and internal ones. Usually this involves exploring our circumstances and our responses to them: what we’re thinking, what we’re most valuing and the choices we’re making.
As we turn to Jesus Christ for help, we learn how to speak our hearts to him. He may lead us to re-examine our beliefs and values in the light of his truth; or we might discover new ways to express sorrows and struggles to him; or by his strength we may find we are able to make wiser choices in the middle of temptations and trials. As we experience his mercy, love and compassion, this impacts how we relate to others, how we see ourselves and our circumstances (past, present and future), and how we relate to God himself. Through biblical counselling we can therefore find hope in our struggles and light for the way ahead.
Meeting with Caroline was a real turning point for me in terms of facing some heart issues that had been bubbling under the surface for too long. She listened to, challenged and helped to steer my thoughts in a gentle, biblical and wonderfully clear way whilst always bringing me back to the helpful question: “Where’s God in this situation?” She lovingly helped me take my eyes off myself and on to God and what He wanted to change in me; a practice I’ve learned more of as the months have gone on since.
